Extremely Useful Free Tools

If you are just starting out in web design, some of these tools may be unfamiliar to you and you may not appreciate their value to you in power and time-savings.  Fear not, we will explain each and show you how to use it.  And best of all, almost all of them are FREE! Descriptions are below, click on the buttons at left to go to each page!

To start, here is a multi-function testing tool by WebSitePulse.com that has a number of useful tests.  We're not keen on their website-monitoring service, it is only available for a fee - there are plenty of free ones out there! But these tests here are free:

Domain Name Digger

Dig Utility will allow you to query the Domain Name Service (DNS) database using the dig command to give you the most behind-the-scenes information for an address.

View the HTML Source Code of Any Page in the Internet

Html Source Viewer is a simple yet powerful utility for in-depth viewing and analyzing any web page source code. This simple tools show how things are actually done on any website on the Internet.

Get Page Headers

The DevShed HTTP Header Viewer (below) will show you the exact HTTP headers that a web server is sending with a HTTP response. This can be useful if you need to know what cookies are being set or where any re-directs are going to, along with other details such as mime-type. It also serves as a quick test that a website/page is up.

WebSafe Colors

A color palette of 216 web safe colors that will be used on platforms with a graphics mode with only 256 colors. Other colors will be dithered to that color palette. Click on one of the colors to view its Hexadecimal value. Alternatively, you can enter a Hexadecimal value manually, and view its color equivalent.

Style Sheet (CSS) Coder

This Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) generator tool will create the CSS properties for buttons, text, and menus all through the site. Simply create the CSS by filling in the fields below.

Grab HTML Content

Simply enter in a valid “live” domain name and experience the tool striping away all of the HTML tags, leaving you with the content for that given page.

URL Encoder

Returns a string in which all non-alphanumeric characters replaced with a percent sign followed by two hex digits and spaces encoded as plus signs. This tool is useful when you want to create links which contain special characters.

Ping Utility

Ping Utility sends echo requests to the address you specify and lists the responses received and their round trip time. When the utility is terminated it summarizes the results, giving the average round trip time and the percent packet loss. This utility can be used to determine whether there is a problem with the network connection between two hosts.
